Light duty is the everyday tow, and it covers more than people expect. Passenger cars, sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, crossovers, small and midsize SUVs, minivans and half-ton pickups. If you drive it to work, it is almost certainly a light duty call.

The practical ceiling is around 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Above that the equipment changes, and this is where calls go wrong. What to tell dispatch so the right truck comes the first time:

• Year, make and model, and whether it is two-wheel or all-wheel drive.
• Whether it rolls, and whether the steering is free. A locked steering column or a seized wheel changes the approach.
• Where it is sitting. A flat lot is straightforward. A steep driveway, soft dirt, sand, a garage with a low door, or nose-in against a wall are not, and we would rather know before we arrive.
• Whether the keys are with the vehicle.
