Section 05 · How long-distance is priced
Long-distance transport is priced on a completely different basis to a local tow, and understanding it makes quotes from any company easier to compare.
It is per mile against a minimum. The rate per mile drops as the distance grows, which is why a 300 mile move does not cost three times a 100 mile one. Below a certain distance the minimum applies, because the truck and the driver are committed for the day either way.
The empty leg is part of the job. A truck taking your car to Los Angeles has to get back. That return, running empty, is real cost and it is inside the rate. It is also why a one-way move toward somewhere we already have work can sometimes be quoted more keenly. Ask, because timing flexibility on your end occasionally saves money on ours.
What is included: loading and unloading, securing the vehicle properly, and any tolls on the route, which matters on Bay Area runs with bridge crossings.
What changes the quote: whether the vehicle runs and rolls, since a non-runner has to be winched aboard at both ends. Vehicle size and weight. Whether either address is somewhere a loaded truck can physically stop and unload. And for a classic or high-value car, any special handling you need.
On timing, we will give you a real window. Drivers have legal limits on hours behind the wheel, so a long southern California run booked late in the day is a next-day delivery, not a tonight delivery. Anyone promising otherwise is either not doing the math or not planning to keep the promise.
