Section 04 · What medium duty actually handles
Medium duty covers roughly the 10,000 to 26,000 pound range. In practice that means box trucks and delivery vans, dually pickups, work trucks carrying service bodies or tool boxes, shuttle buses, larger motorhomes and travel trailers, and loaded commercial vehicles that a light duty truck has no business lifting.
Why the distinction is not marketing. A tow truck has a rated capacity for good reason. Overloading one does not simply risk the load, it changes how the truck itself brakes and steers with several tons hanging off the back of it. It is unsafe on the road and it is not something a properly run outfit will do to save a trip.
Access and staging matter more at this size. A medium duty rig needs room to set up, room to work, and a sensible approach angle. If your vehicle is in a loading dock, a tight yard, a low-clearance garage or a narrow residential street, say so when you call. It changes which truck we send and how we plan the recovery.
Air brakes. Plenty of vehicles in this class have them, and if the system has lost pressure the brakes are locked on by design. That is the safety mechanism working, not a fault. It has to be dealt with properly before the vehicle will roll, and it is a normal part of the job for us.
For commercial and fleet callers, the useful details up front are the vehicle class, whether it is loaded and roughly with what, where it needs to be delivered, and who is authorizing the work. Downtime is the expensive part of a breakdown, so the faster that is settled the faster the truck is moving.
