Almost every deep stuck we pull out started as a shallow one. A driver feels the wheels slip, gives it more throttle, and the tires dig until the frame settles onto the ground. Once the undercarriage is carrying the weight the tires are no longer touching anything that matters, and a simple pull has turned into a full recovery.

So the single most useful thing you can do is stop early. If the wheels are spinning and the vehicle is not moving, get off the throttle. Straighten the wheels, try the gentlest possible input once, and if it does not walk out, stop and call. That is not defeat, it is the cheap option.

Around here it is usually one of a handful of places. The soft ground along the American River Parkway and the levee roads, river bars and sand at the water access points, saturated ground after winter rain, and construction sites and unfinished lots where fill looks solid until it is not.

What we need to know when you call: how deep it is sitting, whether the frame or bumper is resting on the ground, whether it is two or four wheel drive, roughly how far it is from solid ground the truck can stand on, and whether there is any water involved. Those answers decide whether this is one truck, one truck with a snatch block off a second anchor, or two trucks.

Afterward, two things people forget. Mud packs into brakes, radiators and around the driveline, and it wants washing out properly rather than left to bake on. And if water came up over the door sills or anywhere near the air intake, do not start the engine. Water pulled into a cylinder does not compress and the damage that follows is engine replacement territory. Tell us and it goes on the truck instead.
