Sacramento to Bay Area Vehicle Transport

This is the single most common long-distance run we do, and it is short enough to be a same-day job in almost every case. Sacramento to Oakland or Berkeley is around 85 to 90 miles, San Francisco a little more, San Jose closer to 120.

The route is I-80 west through Davis, Vacaville and Fairfield, over the Carquinez Bridge and down into the East Bay, with the bridge crossing continuing into San Francisco. It is a straightforward drive and a genuinely miserable one at the wrong hour.

Which is the thing worth planning around. The stretch from Vallejo through Berkeley is among the most congested in California, and a truck that leaves Sacramento in the middle of the afternoon will sit in it. The same run started early in the morning or in the middle of the day can be an hour and a half of actual driving. It does not change the price. It changes when your car turns up, and if the delivery end has a closing time, it matters.

Delivery in the city is its own small problem. Parts of San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland have narrow streets, steep hills, permit-only parking and driveways a loaded flatbed cannot get near. Have somewhere in mind where a truck can legally stop for ten minutes with room to unload, and tell us where it is before the driver arrives, not while he is circling. A nearby wide side street beats a perfect address he cannot reach.

Bridge tolls are part of the run on both the Carquinez and Bay Bridge crossings, and they appear in the quote rather than as a surprise afterward.

Most of these are not breakdowns. A car bought or sold down on the peninsula, someone relocating, a dealership transfer, a student vehicle going back and forth. Non-runners are equally fine, we just need to know so the right truck comes.
